Firing a client Print E-mail

Okay - so... when is it time to fire a client. I've been working with quite a few filmmakers (independent filmmakers) and I'm learning something... "I don't have a big budget" = "I'm going to get as much out of you as possible for the least amount I can get away with" Do you find this to be true? It's frustrating. Here's the deal. I don't want to work for 'the man' anymore. The big companies take advantage of the clients and charge them outrageous prices. I can offer the same sound design and work for better than half what they would pay. The only consequence is, they are cheap and looking for a deal and I end up with someone who wants a complete sound design for a feature film for $5,000.00. (laughs out loud to self). I don't suppose I would mind this EXCEPT the project becomes the 'never-ending-project'. In other words - they are NEVER satisfied. All of a sudden they are now audio experts and know what sounds good/bad what works/doesn't work... It's madenning. I've decided I'm going to stop going with flat rates. I'll tell them their $5,000.00 buys them XXX number of hours and then we're done until they raise further money OR they figure out how to be 'satisfied' with what they get for $5k. Long story short... I'd like to hear what others have to say about how you handle clients. Contracts you may have signed and agreed upon up front. Thanks for listening. wes
