Control Surface questions... 4 Months, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 0
Ok so I've been doing some research about what Control surfaces I can use with PT LE 7.4 w/ digi002 and Mac G5 (OSX). I've got 2 Yamaha 01v mixers I'd like to use as control surfaces but I've not been able to find whether this is possible or not. I'm considering selling the yamahas in favor of buying a control surface that I know will be compatible. A big problem is that we need at least 16 channels on a control surface. This is turning into a big headache because the command8, Mackie HUI, and Motormix control surfaces that digidesign lists as compatible all only have 8 channels. And then the C-24 has 24 but of course it sells for $10,000. A little out of my price range I'm afraid.

Digidesign says you can only use ONE command8 at a time with digi002, is this the same with the Mackie and Motormix? Any suggestions?

Brandon

With the Mackie you can add expander packs to the main unit for more faders.

the control surfaces you mentioned have bank options...
what this does is you can only control 8 channels physically at one time, but most control up to 48+ as needed. So if you have 12 tracks, but only have 8 faders...you hit the "bank" button on them and then the 8 faders go from controlling channels 1-8 to controlling channels 9-16.
It's pretty standard with all control surfaces. I recommend getting a control surface with a scribble strip that labels each track though. Since banking can get confusing as to which tracks are which.

What I always do, is right click on the track name I want on Fader 1, and select 'scroll into view'. The channels below that track will then be mapped sequentially across your control surface. For instance if you have 16 tracks, and select scroll into view on track 8, that will be mapped to your first fader and track 9 on second, track 10 on third etc etc.

You used to be able to just Ctrl (mac) click on a track and it would scroll into view, but when they added contextual menus this couldn't work (on a Mac). Now if you Cmd-Ctrl-click on a track it will scroll to view in the edit window and you don't have to go the extra step and select from the menu.
