INCOMING VOLUME PEAKING INTO THE RED 4 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 0
This is a question regardng volume and setting peaks when recording in Pro Tools.

Does any one know the proper way to record audio when it comes to volume.

The way I have been doing it is that I set the incoming volume to record at the level just before the volume peaks into the Red zone. However, is this still too loud?

What are your suggestions

That is the basic drill. Back when we had no choice but record at 16-bit it was more import to get the signal as hot as possible without clipping.

With 24-bit recording, I will typically leave myself a little more headroom (than with 16-bit recording) to account for dynamics in the performance. You have more freedom with 24-bit as a signal can basically be recorded to peak at -48 dB (or 48 dB under full scale) and you are basically recording at 16-bit quality. Anything above that is just improving your quality.

24 bits is a LOT of dynamic range. If this is a vocalist, then get them to try to do the screaming a few more inches from the mike(s). If it's a big capsule, good lungs will clip. Do you use a compressor?
