For control room placement, typically you will go after points of reflection from the mix position. One method to find the right spot is to sit in the mix position and have someone hold a mirror near the walls and when you can see the speaker in the mirror that is one of the "early reflection" spots and where you would apply treatment. Of course the process of acoustic treatment is complex. It doesn't sound like your budget is going to allow a proper treatment, so I guess this would be a good place to start.

That's for sure! I'm not trying to build a multi-million dollar-like studio here, nor am I trying to do the entire treatment all at once. The wife and I will not be in this house longer than the next 2 years, so I don't want to spend too much money tuning this place. Right now, I just wanna tackle the most important parts. When we move into a bigger house, I will have much larger place to actually do what I want to the place. The wife wants to eventually have a house built, so if we go that route, I will actually have something built just for studio equipment. Ya dig?! So starting with my corners seems like the ideal move.

They sell the panels fully built, or just the components separately. Their price on Owens-Corning 703 isn't bad, though you might be able to find an insulation distributor in your local area where you can pick it up (and bypass the shipping charges).

Yeah, I just priced it out. If I buy a set of 3 pre-made 48"x24"x4" traps, it'll cost me $260. But if I buy the separate pieces and assemble them myself, 3 would only cost me $170. Seems like a good deal. It'll be even better of a deal if I can find the insulation cheaper. These are much more affordable than the real traps. So at their prices, it'll only cost me about $450 to start off with 8 of these 4" thick traps if I build them myself. Not bad!

Go with the panels over a "foam" corner bass trap. $450 for 8 panels is a KILLER deal. DO IT! DO IT NOW!!!

Spoke to one of their reps this morning. That price is not accurate. The prices of their insulation is just a given. He said this is because industrial materials change prices all the time, so you actually haveto call for a price. May actually end up being much more.

there are two things you have to worry about it seems. Not only treating the room with traps for mixing purposes, but it sounds like you also want to treat it for recording vocals into a mic. Realtraps has a portable vocal booth just for this purpose: http://www.realtraps.com/p_pvb.htm Treating the room is a great thing to do...but you'll still get noises from around the room that you probably don't want recorded (computer, traffic, etc.) This will help isolate you a bit.

Now treating the room for mixing is another thing you want to tackle. Always start with low end treatment...bass traps. You can look at the links above or if you are handy enough, purchase some OC 703/705 in 2" to 4" sizes and place them in your corners (wrapped in fabric). You can either just set them in the corners...or build cool frames for them so they look more a part of the room.
After that, treat your first reflection points. You can still use OC 703 for the first reflection points. Just build a frame for the fiberglass and hang them on the wall.
Here's a big list of distributors of fiberglass: http://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=179563
