Transfering files. very new 3 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 0
I have been introduced to protools 7.4 thru access to use of a community studio. I have been given by a muso friend a mac g4 (OS9.2)running Prtools 5.4 and a digi 001 interface, all working well that I have set up at home. I'm having no luck tranferring files from the community studio to home. I save my session as a copy (Protools 5-6) bring em home to read but the prompt is that the application that created the files cannot be found. Do i stand a chance? I can import raw files but I want be able to transfer work I do on 7.4 to home (5.4) to edit and mix at home. Any advice would be appreciated.

You can't open a version 7 file with version 5. You can go the other way though. If you want to open the version 7 file in version 5, you have to do a "Save As Copy In" and save it as a version 5 file. You will lose many features in going back that far, however, like no Elastic Audio, no instrument tracks, fewer sends, etc. As long as you keep the sessions simple it will be fine.

It sounds like you are trying to open the PT session from the Finder by double clicking the session file. Have you tried opening the session from within Pro Tools?

Also, is there a .pts at the end of the file name? If so you might try and remove the extension. You might also want to try and do a "get info" on the session and then choose the application that should open it.

There may be some issues related to opening the resulting file in os9 that need to be dealt with in the Save As Copy In process, but it has been a very long time since I used os9 and I'd have go through the process myself before I could tell you what to check, sorry.
