Purchasing the right PROTOOLS program! 3 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 0
O ye my Friends i.e. ProTool Experts

I have a Motif6...That is all I have! I know I need Protools and I know I need to get a computer other than the one I have to run the system! I basically want Professional Production right now! I have the sounds BUT I need the professionalism of Protools!

Can one of you PROTOOL experts help me out and give me some suggestions on what I should do?

Is it okay to use a desktop to run protools? Or should I purchase a Laptop?

I would truly appreciate it if you all would give me some sound advice concerning WHAT ProTools system I should purchase and also what type of Computer system should I buy?

My budget is an ebay budget LOL!

Thanks...

Go for a mac if you can - in my experience Pro Tools runs better on Apple systems. Make sure you get a system with as much RAM as possible.

I run a Mbox2 on a macbook and it runs sweet - I mainly do video work so it has a high track count, and quite high plug-in ratio, and I never have any issues.

This is the type of input I am looking for!

So far Mac systems have 1 vote & Windows 0 votes....

+1 for mac.

However, if you love windows and are very proficient with it that is fine too. You just have to be a little more particular about the computer, making sure that you have a system that is compatible. With PC there are hundreds of different component packages which makes it very difficult for digidesign to "approve" one type. You also have a little more difficulty with troubleshooting problems that arrise. Since only Apple is making macs and the OS that runs them, digi can easily test and approve macs, and troubleshooting issues is typically much easier.

According to some digi guys that I've talked to Macs are the computer of choice for most professionals, in fact, there are very few HD PC users, and those that do typically work in a broadcasting environment. Regarding LE systems it is split 50/50.

cneal thanks! Check this out....

Would this be smart to buy an eMac but then upgrading? As of now the eMac has these qualities:

Processor Type: PowerPC G4; Product Family: eMac; Processor Speed (per Core): 700 MHz; Screen Size: 15 inches; Processor Configuration: Single Core; Operating System: Mac OS X Memory (RAM): 128 MB; Primary Drive: DVD-ROM Hard Drive Capacity: 40 GB

I keep hearing get as much RAM as possible but the above is it compatible? Then would it be safe to UPGRADE THE RAM or whatever else that needs to be upgraded to RUN Protools on an eMac or is that even possible?

Thanks cneal

Manuaim....

I wouldn't try and go with an eMac. You need as much power as you can get to run PT natively, and G4s just won't cut it these days. You would be extremely disappointed unless you didn't want to use plug-ins. Not to mention eMacs aren't even being produced anymore, and I don't think any eMac has ever appeared on the digi approved list (although I could be wrong).
