Im having pretty much the same issue, i came to the conclusiont hat a mac book pro would be ideal but your talking around £1600 if not more.
And according to my friend whos really clued up about computers it will cost just about as much to get a laptop(windows) which will run protools well.
Im hoping someone will tell me some good news that it wont cost soo much lol

I run pro tools on a 2.0ghz dual core mac book (standard), with 2gbs of RAM and never encounter any issues, even with a heavy RTAS count (I tend to bus or bounce a lot of effects though, to save on my processor). The newer Mac Books now are capable of taking 4gb of RAM, so if you max it out (buy it from a company such as crucial as its about a 1/4 of the price that apple charge) then you'll have a system more than capable of handling what you throw at it. Of course if you have a max track count and a zillion effects, it will struggle, but if you use it in the way i described, you shouldn't encounter any major problems. I will ALWAYS recommend macs over pcs as well. They just work better.

I'm not going to get into any Mac vs PC debate. To be honest, Pro Tools runs great on both, as long as, and this is the important part, you get one that is declared compatible by DigiDesign, both in terms of the physical components of the machine and the operating system that comes with it (for example, it took a good long time before Pro Tools was compatible with Leopard).
Moral of the story is check the compatibility of whatever system you are considering purchasing on Digi's website before buying!
