003 and external effects device 3 Months, 1 Week ago Karma: 0
I'm a novice to the whole pro tools thing and I'm learning as i go. i have the external effects machine routed in and out through the s/pdif connections.
i recorded a dry guitar track then routed the out on that track to the s/pdif on the 003. i can see on the effects device that the signal is reaching it but i can't figure out how to route the signal back so i can hear the processed sound from the guitar track.
can anyone tell me what i'm doing wrong or tell me what to do next?

i apologize in advance if my explanation seems like nonsense and i will try to relay my situation differently if need be.

windows xp
pro tools 7.4
dual core processor
2 gigs ram
003 factory

Thanks!
J. Steele

Create another track (an AUX track if you want to keep things fluid, or an Audio track if you want to "print" the effect), set it's input to the S/PDIF Input (or inputs if it is stereo).

Also, IF you wanted the dry track mixed in with the effected track, rather than set the dry guitar's output to the S/PDIF, you could create a SEND to the S/PDIF out (of course then you'd have to consider the latency issues on the effected track). Just another option.

Thanks for the reply!

I tried this before i posted as it seemed like the way to go and your response confirms that. i tried again just to make sure and i still get nothing. what i do hear now is a series of pops from the aux track that is routed from the s/pdif coming from the effects device. i didn't notice it before.
So, i think now that either the s/pdif in on the 003 is bad or the s/pdif out on the effects device is bad. now to test that theory...

thanks!

Ticks and pops are typically an indication of a clock error. You need to either tell the fx device to clock to the incoming s/pdif or tell PT to clock to the incoming s/pdif. I would do the former (set your fx device to clock to PT).

With HD I know you can bring in s/pdif without it being the master clock, but I'm not sure what options you have on an 003. Maybe someone who uses one can clarify.

Yes, that is true on the 003 as well.
