have a $11k budget with Dell, what on earth toget? 1 Month, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 0
Hi,

I'm a first time user of pro-tools. I've been recording off a tascam 646 for years, and am just now getting back into it.

I had an old company and now have a $11k credit with Dell, of which I want to puchase a computer dedicated to protools. Want to get the 002 or 003 and mod it with Black Lion Audio.

I was thinking a machine like this:
- Dell Precision Workstation, T7400 32 bit
- 2x Quad Core Intel Xeon X5450
- Windows XP Pro, w/ SP2
- 256MB PCIe x16 nVidia Quadro
- 4GB, DDR SDRAM FBD Memory, 667Mhz
- 500GB Harddrive (I can increase this later)

There is no firewire option on Dell.com that I can see, so i guess I'll have to install a compliant firewire card later.

So really I'm asking, does the above system look okay for use with ProTools? If not, what should I get with my budget?

Thanks much!

you have 11k to buy a Dell or you have 11k AND a Dell?
11 grand to spend on a Dell is way over budget. If you have that much money to spend on a computer I'd go with something other than a Dell. And then spend the rest on equipment/acoustics

If you got to buy from dell, make sure you get a couple of their 24" ultrasharp monitors as well........

One important thing to consider is that you will want at least 2 hard drives.

  • One for your operating system and software

  • A separate one dedicated to recording onto

  • Perhaps a third one to store all of your samples and virtual instruments (if you plan on using lots of them)

helpful already. But I just want to make sure there's no special hardware considerations or incompatabilities that anyone's heard of with DELLs.

I do have a credit only to use with Dell, so I was just going to get the fastest machine I can find on the website.

Other than getting monitors and a second hard drive, I assume I can just go for it??

You also NEED to check out Digi's System Compatibility information to make sure that the chipset and other various parts that Dell uses in your computer are compatible with ProTools.

Here's all the info you need...

Pro Tools LE 7.4 - Windows Desktop Systems

and

Is My PC Compatible With Pro Tools?

Best of luck!
