![]() My first conversations with Chris Haynes many years ago revealed his expertise and resourcefulness while working with Gary at 5.1 Entertainment. Mr. Lux is renown as a top surround music mixer and recipient of many Surround Music Awards including Best Concert Mix 2005, Ben Harper and The Blind Boys of Alabama “Live at The Apollo”. Together and individually they have been the creative and technical force behind some of the ever-evolving techniques for creating the most realistic experiences in the three-dimensional world of surround mixing. (Usher, Janet Jackson, The Foo Fighters, Sting, Rob Thomas.) Gary and Mr. Haynes, (as he is affectionately called), decided that the next chapter for them was to hit the road and capture the surround music experience themselves using Digidesign's revolutionary Venue Live Mixing Console. This system would give them the audiophile quality, flexibility, and the technology needed to record the hottest artists and events on tour today. "We chose the Venue because Digidesign products are state of the art production tools. This console is not just your ordinary FOH board. For us, it’s our mobile recording facility. We’re asked to provide many isolated audio streams during the filming of a concert and we’re able to provide all that with The Venue and at the same time slamming a live 5.1 mix for broadcast. We contracted the design project and purchase to RSPE Audio not only because of their technical ability but because they really listened and understood our needs." In their first concerts, they recorded, mixed, and uplinked Rod Stewart at Times Square, and Widespread Panic at The Fox Theater Atlanta in 5.1 Surround as well as Keith Urban. As part of the recent Honda Ski Tour in a diverse array of locations including Sun Valley, Idaho, Breckenridge and Aspen, Colorado, and Squaw Valley, California, they recorded and mixed 3 Days Grace, Hinder, The Wailers, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Sean Paul, G Love and Special Sauce. During that recent tour, they bravely tempted the warnings on the Venue that state “do not use in temperatures below 38 degrees.” During one of these recordings, Gary and Chris discovered ?how slick the redundant digital Snake Option was when someone’s case cut through the Venue Primary Control Cable and left it to drown in a giant ice pond created during a slight reprieve in the Arctic weather. Not even a hic-up. The Venue was pretty much stock with the addition of some HDx cards to get 72 tracks to Protools as well as 48 analog outputs recording simultaneously to dual Tascam MX-2424's for backup.??It seems that Bennett Music’s calendar is filling up this year with major acts discovering that when you record and mix your shows with two of the most innovative producers and engineers in LA and with state of the art technology, you can take your show to a more informed and demanding audience than ever before. Give Gary Lux the opportunity to record and mix your show for DVD or broadcast and an artist's approach to the process will forever change your listening experience. We are told that we can expect some 'blog' activity over the next months at protoolsusers.org RSPE is proud to have been a part of this story and look forward to being part of yours. Please call RSPE Audio and let us design your next system! Russ Belttary www.rspe.com |
